The overhead Squat is an essential movement assessment to determine the integrity of many joints in the body. When done perfectly, it involved full flexion of the ankles, knees, and hips and shoulders, a neutral lumbar spine and full extension of the thoracic spine.

My patient graciously allowed me to use a video of his overhead squat for the purpose of  this blog. He presented to me originally with left hip pain into flexion and internal rotation, bilateral ankles restricted dorsiflexion and shoulder flexion limitations and thoracic spine could not extend. He couldn’t bend over to tie his show without pain

After two months of mobilizing his hip and ankles he is able to do as shown on the video ( Squat clip)

So as you can see in the first attempt, he was losing his balance. Now obviously we haven’t addressed the thoracic mobility or shoulder mobility yet so you don’t see a true overhead squat and these are likely contributors to his inability to squat. But why is it that when we merely add a two pound weight in his hands, his stability improves globally throughout his body. If you know the FMS and SFMA system and are reading this, shouldn’t the lack of thoracic DN (JMD) and shoulder DN (JMD) trump the core stability?  It is amazing that a very small input into the nervous system, has large effects! The trick is finding the right stimulus and the weakest link in the movement pattern.

How do we find this weakest link? The answer is Functional Screening!
